Mediterranean diet good for the heart | Reuters

I wanted to take a minute today and share an article I saw about eating a healthy Mediterranean diet.  As you probably know, heart disease is a problem that is not going away and in many ways is directly related to your personal health.  If you are healthy, you probably won’t have as much to worry about.

Specific components of a Mediterranean diet differ from region to region but, generally, the key features include high consumption of olive oil, plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole-grain cereals, nuts and seeds. Fish is favored over other meat sources with relatively low consumption of red meat. Alcohol, especially red wine, and dairy products are used in moderation.

Don’t worry about eating an exact Mediterranean diet.  Just use some of the things they do.  Avoid unhealthy oils (like those used to make fried foods).  Eat less red meat and more fish (you knew fish was healthier than steak already didn’t you?).  Add more plant based foods to your diet.  If you make these part of your lifestyle like people of the Mediterranean, it should go a long way towards helping you beat heart disease.
